Limescale build-up is one of the most common problems in UK bathrooms, particularly for households in hard water areas. A tell-tale sign of the issue is poor water pressure or an uneven spray pattern when using your shower.

Brian Toward, CEO of bathroom retailer Wholesale Domestic, explains: “If you’re seeing reduced water pressure or uneven water flow, limescale is likely the culprit and if you live in a hard water area, limescale can build up fairly quickly.” While white vinegar is widely known as the go-to solution for cleaning shower heads, the key tool you’ll need to make the method work isn’t always discussed. And it’s something almost everyone already has in their kitchen.

According to Toward: “Distilled white vinegar is the answer to cleaning your shower head and addressing your limescale problems.

“Pour some white vinegar into a sandwich bag and place the showerhead in it, making sure it’s fully submerged in the vinegar.”

The sandwich bag serves as a practical and mess-free container that can be tied around the shower head with a rubber band or string.

This allows the vinegar to soak and dissolve the mineral deposits without removing the fixture. After letting it sit for at least an hour, simply rinse the shower head under hot water and enjoy the improved water flow.

What makes the sandwich bag trick so effective is its convenience – it’s cheap, disposable, and perfectly sized to cling around most shower heads.

Even if you’re short on time or vinegar, Toward offers an alternative: “If you’re in a rush and don’t have any white vinegar, cola can work as a quick fix.”

The same method applies – just fill a zip-lock bag with cola, tie it around the head, and leave it for 30 to 60 minutes.

Cola’s acidity helps break down stubborn limescale just like vinegar. Be sure to rinse thoroughly afterwards to avoid any sticky residue.

This DIY hack is a game-changer for anyone dealing with persistent limescale problems. Using a sandwich bag makes the entire process effortless and avoids the hassle of dismantling plumbing.

Plus, with alternative options like cola, you’re never short of solutions even when the cupboard is bare. Regular monthly cleaning using this method can help keep your shower functioning smoothly and looking its best.

It’s a simple reminder that sometimes the most effective cleaning tools are already hiding in your kitchen drawer.
