A UK police officer has issued a warning to homeowners, revealing the one mistake that makes it easy for burglars to pick your house as their next target. In an interview with security specialists at Online Spy Shop, the officer, based in Greater Manchester, explained that many people unknowingly signal to criminals that their home is vulnerable – just by their usual nightly routine.
The officer revealed that leaving blinds or curtains open at night is one of the biggest mistakes homeowners make. “People assume that because it’s dark outside, no one is looking in. But for burglars, this is prime time to scope out a property. The contrast between the lit-up interior and the dark street outside makes it easy to see inside without being noticed.
“Criminals can quickly spot valuables, check if security systems are in place, and even figure out how many people live in the house,” the officer explained.
Burglars aren’t just looking for valuables – they’re also watching for patterns and weaknesses.
Leaving curtains open allows them to check for expensive electronics, handbags and car keys left in plain sight.
It also allows them to see if there are visible security systems, such as alarms or cameras.
They may also be able to assess whether someone is home or if the house is regularly empty at certain times and determine the best entry points by studying door placements and potential blind spots.
A spokesperson from Online Spy Shop explained: “Burglars don’t just break into homes at random. They observe properties first, looking for signs that indicate an easy target.
“Open curtains at night give them a full view inside, helping them decide if it’s worth the risk. It’s like handing them a blueprint of your home layout.”
But, there are some simple changes you can make to keep your home safe.
Using smart blinds or blackout curtains will fully block interior views while positioning valuables out of sight from windows will ensure burglars aren’t able to see any expensive items.
It’s also advisable to install motion-sensor lights outside to deter anyone lingering near windows.
Making these simple changes could stop your home from being a victim of a burglary.
