NYPD officers brutally attacked in Times Square by migrants as wild brawl erupts

Four migrants were caught on camera assaulting two NYPD officers in Times Square, New York.

The brawl unfolded when the officers approached the quartet to move along, sparking a violent altercation. Despite arrests later that evening, Darwin Andres Gomez Izquiel, Kelvin Servat Arocha, Juarez Wilson, and Yorman Reveron were released without bail.

This incident has reignited criticism of New York’s lenient bail laws, which many argue contribute to the escalating violence on city streets.

At approximately 10:44 p.m., the suspects, aged between 19 and 24, were apprehended and charged with Assault on a Police Officer, Gang Assault, Obstructing Governmental Administration, and Disorderly Conduct. However, they were promptly released without bail, drawing sharp criticism from law enforcement officials and the public alike.

New York’s progressive bail laws, aimed at preventing indigent individuals from languishing in jail, have faced growing scrutiny for potentially emboldening repeat offenders. Jhoan Boada, 22, was the latest to be arrested on charges of Attempted Assault on a Police Officer and Gang Assault, highlighting the concerning trend of criminals cycling through the justice system.

Amidst the uproar, it was revealed that Reveron, the eldest of the arrested men, had prior assault and robbery charges pending in Manhattan. His criminal history includes assaulting a Nordstrom Rack employee and attempting a robbery at Macy’s Herald Square.

The assault, which left one officer with facial cuts and the other with bodily bruises, has intensified calls for stricter enforcement and accountability.

Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Hendry condemned the attacks, saying: “Attacks on police officers are becoming an epidemic, and the reason is a revolving door we’re seeing in cases like this one. It is impossible for police officers to deal effectively with crime and disorder if the justice system can’t or won’t protect us while we do that work.”

As investigations into the incident continue under the purview of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office, concerns mount over the city’s ability to manage its migrant influx.

With over 100,000 migrants arriving in 2023 alone, New York City faces unprecedented challenges in providing shelter and resources. Mayor Eric Adams has appealed for state and federal assistance to address the estimated $12 billion imposed by the migrant crisis.

Back in September 2023, Governor Hochul said: “We have to get the word out, that when you come to New York, you’re not going to have more hotel rooms, we don’t have capacity. So we have to also message properly that we’re at a limit – if you’re going to leave your country, go somewhere else.”
