'Not fit to lead Britain!' Penny Mordaunt rips into Keir Starmer in furious Commons attack

Penny Mordaunt ripped into Sir Keir Starmer in a furious Commons attack after a day of chaos yesterday over a Gaza ceasefire vote.

The Commons Leader said Sir Keir has shown he is “not fit” to lead Britain.

Speaking in the Commons, she said: “He puts the interests of the Labour Party before the interests of the British people.

“It’s the Labour leader that doesn’t get Britain and the past week has shown that he is not fit to lead it.”

She blamed Labour for chaotic scenes in the Commons on Wednesday.

Ms Mordaunt said: “This House will never bow to extremists, threats, or intimidation. It has not, it will not, it must not.

“And I would ask all honourable members not to do this House a further disservice by suggesting that the shameful events that took place yesterday were anything other than party politics on behalf of the Labour Party.”

Ms Mordaunt’s intervention comes after a day of high drama which has left Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle battling for his job.

He sparked widespread fury when he upended parliamentary convention by selecting Labour’s bid to amend an SNP motion calling for an immediate ceasefire.

He decided the Commons would first vote on Labour’s amendment before moving on to further votes on the SNP’s original motion, and then a Government proposal seeking an “immediate humanitarian pause”.

The Speaker disregarded warnings from the House of Commons Clerk over the unprecedented nature of the move, which provoked uproar in the chamber.

His decision sparked fury from the Conservative and SNP benches, who accused him of helping Sir Keir Starmer avoid another damaging revolt over the Middle East issue.

Sir Lindsay apologised for his handing of the debate which saw MPs pass Labour’s amendment to the opposition day motion as Conservative and SNP politicians walked out of the debate in protest.

More than 50 MPs have signed a parliamentary motion tabled by a Tory MP declaring no confidence in the Speaker.
