A Hollywood adaptation of one of the most critically acclaimed games in recent memory could be in development.
Gaming enthusiasts believe they’ve found a clue suggesting the celebrated Super Mario Bros franchise could be getting a new instalment.
Universal Pictures, which brought The Super Mario Bros. Movie to audiences in 2023, has recently secured a domain name for what appears to be the sequel, and fans are now bracing for the news to be officially confirmed.
Audiences were delighted by the animated feature, starring Charlie Day and Chris Pratt, with many praising how it perfectly captured the essence of the beloved game series.
References to various spin-offs from the iconic platformer featured throughout the movie, with kart-racing sequences and a Donkey Kong battle scene honouring some of the games’ most treasured moments.
Nintendo fans now suspect a Super Mario Galaxy movie could be in the works as a follow-up to the original film.
Universal has secured domain names for “Super Mario Galaxy Movie” and a reveal could arrive as soon as tomorrow. Whether the project will be unveiled during Nintendo Direct, the firm’s presentation showcase, remains to be confirmed.
Players are hoping there may be several fresh announcements from the company today (September 12), with some guessing they could be made at 2pm. Today is the 40th anniversary of Super Mario Bros., and enthusiasts speculate this timing could signal a significant reveal.
Supporters remain divided over whether bringing Super Mario Galaxy to cinemas would prove successful.
The challenge is considerable given that the game, alongside its follow-up, holds legendary status amongst devotees.
One user took to X and posted: “This was hands down one of the best Mario games I have ever played. I grew up playing this game, I even still have the copies of the game from their launch dates. I hope this happens.”
Another disagreed, replying: “Mario Galaxy film proving Nintendo will milk this franchise until the heat death of the universe.” A third wrote: “If this really happens, Mario Galaxy fans are going to be so happy.”
Whether an adaptation of the space-travelling platformer released for the Nintendo Wii in 2007 materialises remains to be seen.
However, cinema enthusiasts and gamers are keen to give it a chance following the release of 2023’s blockbuster adaptation. One person posted: “The IP is legendary, and the care and dedication put into these movies is next level.”
Another suggested: “Nintendo is really going all-in on Mario’s 40th.” A third agreed, posting: “I mean if they did register a domain name then its literally just confirmed.”
Whilst movie enthusiasts are excited by the potential announcement, some gamers reckon it’s also a fantastic indication for the gaming series.
Those anticipating a third instalment believe the domain registration for a film means Super Mario Galaxy 3 is extremely probable. One thrilled fan posted: “Super Mario Galaxy 3 is happening isn’t it.”
