Nintendo follows PS5 and Xbox with price increase for Switch consoles and games

Switch fans have been dealt a fresh blow in Canada today, as Nintendo announces plans to increase the price of the original console and games.

In a statement on the Nintendo website, the company said that the price increase was in response to changing market conditions.

As a result, the regular Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite and OLED models will all see a price increase. That’s on top of Amiibo figures, physical and digital games, plus accessories.

Nintendo explains more: “Pricing for the original Nintendo Switch family of systems and products in Canada will change based on market conditions.

“These include Nintendo Switch – OLED Model, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite, physical and digital Nintendo Switch games and Nintendo Switch accessories.

“Other Nintendo products, including amiibo and Nintendo Switch Online memberships will also experience price changes.”

The only saving grace is that the price increases don’t apply to the Nintendo Switch 2, which launched last month.

So far the price increases have only been announced for Canada, so fingers crossed UK customers won’t be affected.

The news comes just months after Sony increased the price of the PS5 and PS Plus in select regions, with Microsoft doing the same for the Xbox Series of consoles.

Original Nintendo Switch sales have been on the decline in recent months, especially with the release of the Switch 2.

The Nintendo Switch 2 made its debut on June 5, alongside games like Mario Kart World, Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour and Cyberpunk 2077.

The new console features a much larger display compared to the original Switch, as well as improved specs.

The Joy-Con controllers are also much bigger and now snap to the console via magnets. Likewise, the Joy-Cons can be placed on a surface and used as a Mouse.
