Nicole Kidman and husband Keith Urban are among the Hollywood stars reportedly headed for Portugal. According to local Portugese media outlet SIC Notícias, the Academy Award-winning actress, 58, has applied for residency in the country, with plans to spend more time there. The on-screen star was reportedly spotted stepping off a private jet in a wealthy part of town. She is believed to be purchasing a home in Portugal’s luxury CostaTerra Golf and Ocean Club. Nicole is reportedly house-hunting in the town of Cascais, a members-only luxury community less than 100 miles outside of Lisbon. The royal family has links to the area as Princess Eugenie has a home there. In addition, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are rumored to have purchased a home there in 2024, the New York Post reported.
While CostaTerra Golf and Ocean Club is a favorite among the wealthier visitors to Portugal, locals have shared their frustration about changes to the area in a string of Google reviews. One complained: “Worst decision ever to build this. I used to visit the beach here, now they blocked the access.” Another echoed: “Very sad what was done here.” A fourth argued: “Costa Terra: a private playground for millionaires who arrive by helicopter, dine with private chefs, and bulldoze everything that made this coast real. Public beaches? Locked down. Protected land? Flattened for golf courses. Local communities? Pushed aside and priced out. ‘Eco-luxury’? A cruel joke dressed up in greenwash.”
Another added: “It’s just terrible, they destroyed this beautiful place trying to privatize the area and than… Nothing… At least give us the camping back, there’s space for everyone.”
A sixth person wrote, “I don’t believe they are blocking the whole beach. Locals can still access it from the residential side where the houses are or from the camp site but I don’t like where this is heading therefore I will not support this. That’s why I’m giving it 1 star as this is bad for the locals.”
Others showed their support, writing: “Best place ever. The company is creating hundreds of jobs for locals. Preservation and sustainability are key there.”
According to the New York Post, Nicole and Keith have already purchased a home in the country’s capital, Lisbon.
Another area that “has become very popular for celebrities and high-end clientele,” according to D’Aria, is the Algarve, the southernmost region of Portugal, noting the hotels in the area “are spread out, giving you that space and privacy away from prying eyes”, Fox Business reports.
Nicole and Keith met in January 2005 and were engaged a little over a year later in May 2006. Just one month later, the couple were married in a June 2006 ceremony in Sydney, Australia.
They share two daughters, Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 14.
