The start of spring is set to be ushered in with a wall of snow and rain sweeping in from the Atlantic Ocean.
Weather data released by WXCharts.com shows a deluge of rain covering almost the entirety of Britain on March 9, with some parts of the country set to be hit by as much as 20mm per hour.
Accompanying the wet weather could be significant snow in Scotland and northern areas as the change of seasons fails to bring with it a change from wintery weather.
A Met Office forecast for the period said: “A split in weather conditions is likely across the country for the start of spring. Northwestern areas will see bouts of rain and stronger winds as Atlantic weather systems arrive from the West.
“These spells of wet and windy weather will move southeast to some degree at times.
“Through the course of this period there is an increasing chance of unsettled conditions becoming more dominant across the UK.
“Temperatures generally around average, notwithstanding some chilly nights, though with milder interludes likely.”
The weather looks set to make landfall across Britain’s west coast before sweeping South-east and covering most of the country.
Only London and areas to the east and north east of the capital will avoid heavy rain on Sunday, March 9.
Across the north, spring will bring with it snow of up to 10cm per hour, covering much of east and central Scotland.
Areas of northern England from Northumberland to South Yorkshire are likely to experience mild to heavy snow, which can lead to travel and traffic chaos.
Temperatures slightly above freezing, around 4 degrees, mean that the snow is likely to set throughout the weekend, with hilly areas the most susceptible to settled snow.
The combination of snow, rain and cold temperatures poses the risk of icy conditions across much of northern England and Scotland for the second week of March.
