New Ryanair rules see travellers told to take boxes on board | Travel News | Travel

Ryanair travellers have been advised by an expert to pack a box in their hand luggage, as a new rule has been confirmed. On Thursday, July 4, the budget carrier announced it will enlarge its “personal bag” dimension by 20% to align with new EU standards.

Passengers will soon be able to bring a bag measuring up to 40cm x 30cm x 20cm into the cabin at no extra cost. The item should “must fit under the seat in front you” and weigh less than 10kg.

With Ryanair set to introduce its new bag size in the coming weeks, Tom Schott, from Schott Packaging, warns travellers against making a mistake which could prove expensive. According to him, the additional allowance may lead to overstuffing bags.

Tom told the Express: “The new dimension is a game-changer, but only if you use it wisely. The mistake is to simply cram more in. The real victory for passengers is using that volume to pack with structure. A well-packed bag is a compliant bag”.

He recommends employing five packing tactics, including the use of a box. Tom explains: “Soft bags lose volume. A lightweight, snug-fitting cardboard box inside your bag provides a rigid frame, allowing you to use every corner and prevent the bulge that attracts gate staff.”

Further tips include utilising ziplock bags to reduce wasted space, organising goods within smaller cubes or bags, and buffering valuables. Tom added: “Place a small, sturdy box in the centre of your bag, cushioned by clothes. This creates a crush-proof zone for chargers, adapters, and toiletries, preventing damage and leaks.”

Tom further recommends travellers to “pre-plan your bag”, suggesting they lay all items out on the floor within a 40x30cm outline first, which “provides a real-world view of what fits and helps you assemble your packed modules logically and quickly.

“These aren’t just clever tricks, but core principles of efficient packing. By applying them, you can confidently pack that extra outfit and still breeze through the boarding gate”.
