LA speed demons are about to get a very costly Halloween surprise.

Los Angeles is rolling out 125 speed cameras across the city, with the first wave expected to be installed by Halloween and fines eventually reaching as high as $500 for the heaviest-footed drivers.

But motorists won’t have to worry about getting nailed by all 125 right away. Just 20 or so cameras are expected to be in place by Oct. 26, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The cameras were originally slated to be installed between April and July, but the city needed additional time to establish a contract for construction of the systems, the outlet reported.

“In Los Angeles, around one in five fatal crashes in the city were directly attributed to speeding in 2024. To combat rising traffic deaths and injuries, the city is deploying the Speed Safety Systems Program to curb speeding and dangerous driving,” the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) said.

“Speed Safety Systems have proven to reduce reckless speeding.”

“In San Francisco, early data shows up to a 72% reduction in speeding on key corridors with cameras,” the agency added on.

Once activated, the cameras will snap photos of speeding vehicles’ license plates. Drivers will then receive a notice of violation in the mail within 15 days.

And unlike a traditional moving violation, the ticket won’t add points to a driver’s license or be reported to auto insurance companies. The system will work more like a parking ticket.

California law also gives drivers a little breathing room when each new camera goes live.

Under AB 645, every newly activated camera must have a 60-day warning period before fines are imposed.

Once that grace period expires, drivers caught going 11 to 15 mph over the speed limit will face a $50 fine.

Go 16 to 25 mph over and the penalty jumps to $100.

Drivers traveling 26 mph or more over the limit will get hit with a $200 ticket, while the steepest penalty — $500 — is reserved for drivers going 100 mph over the posted speed limit.

Nearly 36,640 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes across the US in 2025, according to a statistical projection from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. California accounted for an estimated 3,630 of those deaths.

All 125 cameras are set to be activated by the end of the year.
