New Falklands fears as Argentina’s Milei vows ‘to get islands back’ | World | News

Javier Milei has issued another warning over Britain’s continued sovereignty over the Falkland Islands, telling an Argentinian radio station his government is determined to “recover” the them.

However, the Argentine President, a close ally of Donald Trump, was clear that any route to taking the islands from the UK would come via diplomatic means.

He told Radio Rivadavia his government was working hard “on the diplomatic front to recover the Falkland Islands and will exhaust all roads for that purpose.

“We are working hard to achieve that”, he added.

In October of this year, Keir Starmer was adamant that both the Falklands and Gibraltar would remain under British control.

He told the House of Commons that both territories “are British and they will remain British”.

The sometimes bombastic Argentinian leader, known for his rock’n’roll hair style, penchant for chainsaws, and libertarian political outlook, has nevertheless been consistent in his commitment to taking back “Las Malvinas” peacefully.

He told the BBC in May 2024 that he wanted to reclaim the islands for Argentina “within the framework of peace” and admitted that the process could take “decades”.

Yesterday, Mr Milei was pictured meeting President-Elect Trump. He was the first world leader to shake the hand of the incoming president since his election win.

Praising his soon-to-be counterpart, Mr Trump told Mr Milei at Mar-a-Lago: “The job you’ve done is incredible. Make Argentina Great Again, you know, MAGA. He’s a MAGA person”.
