According to research from a trade publication, Sainsbury’s is cheaper than Tesco, Asda, and Morrisons this week. The Grocer’s ‘Grocer 33’ measures the major supermarket brands every week across 33 different items to see who is cheapest.
The research found that Sainsbury’s was cheapest across 11 items and its total basket cost £65.07. Some notable items it was cheapest over included Gü Sundaes, margherita pizza and Soreen malt loaf. What’s more, Nectar members would have enjoyed an £11.02 discount. The cost of the basket has fallen by 0.7% compared to last year, while a number of rivals saw their baskets’ prices go up.
Next on the list is Asda, where the basket comes in at just 69 p behind Sainsbury’s. It was the cheapest supermarket for 13 items, but its basket cost has increased by 7%.
Morrison’s is next on the list. At £66.77, it is £1.70 more expensive than Sainsbury’s. However, the cost of its basket has actually come down by 2.5% compared to a year ago.
Coming in fourth is Tesco. The basket’s price was £68.81 – £3.74 more than Sainsbury’s. According to the publication, the supermarket’s prices have gone up 0.6% year-on-year. However, using a Clubcard would have reduced the cost dramatically.
Members of the loyalty scheme would have seen a reduction in the cost of their basket of £3.55. Items where it came in cheapest were gammon steaks, Dettol mutlipurpose cleaning wipes, and premium on-the-vine tomatoes.
The Grocer also assessed Waitrose, which was significantly more expensive. The premium supermarket costs £80.50 for the 33 items, nearly £15 more expensive than Sainsbury’s.
When you include Waitrose, the average basket cost across all the supermarkets was £69.38.
