Netflix's The Thursday Murder Club first trailer compared to Mobland and Knives Out

Netflix have released the first trailer for the eagerly awaited film version of The Thursday Murder Club, with it being compared to Mobland and Knives Out.

The teaser for the forthcoming adaptation, based on Richard Osman’s bestseller, was unveiled today (May 29), providing a sneak peek at what viewers can anticipate from their new favourite amateur sleuths.

Initial footage suggests a blend of Midsomer Murders and Only Murders In The Building.

The narrative revolves around a group of pensioners who occupy their time by cracking murder cases.

Its ensemble cast boasts big names such as Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Sir Ben Kingsley, and David Tennant.

To date, five books in the series have been published.

Such has been their popularity that presenter-turned-author Osman followed them up with a separate murder mystery series titled We Solve Murders, reports Surrey Live.

Although Netflix has now released the inaugural trailer for The Thursday Murder Club, it remains quite cryptic. At just over a minute long, it reveals little about the specifics of the case the club will be tackling.

It is revealed that they are probing a cold case involving a woman falling out of a window one night in 1973. However, according to the synopsis provided by Netflix, when an unexplained death occurs right on their doorstep, their casual detective work takes an exciting twist as they find themselves embroiled in a genuine whodunit.

Eager fans wasted no time in expressing their exhilaration once the trailer dropped, with many appreciating the fact that it was shared on an actual Thursday.

Responding on YouTube, one viewer shared their enthralment: “I honestly cant believe this is finally happening! The trailer gave me chills. I’ve loved these books for so long and seeing the characters come to life on screen is incredibly emotional. I’m so attached to them, it almost feels personal. I’m beyond excited to see how it all unfolds.”

Notably, fans of the recent Mobland featuring Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan were thrilled about the actors’ swift reunion, with a fan commenting: “Mobland fans in the house? Glad to see Pierce and Helen back together.”

While enthusiasm ran high, some voiced mild discontent over the format, pondering: “Why is this a movie when I need seven seasons at 12 episodes per season?”.

The stellar cast list has certainly been a talking point, with one social media user proclaiming: “That cast is amazing, can’t wait to see them solve mysteries together on August 28. Sounds fun!”

Many commented on what they thought was “perfect casting”. Though one added a wry observation: “It’s Knives Out for pensioners.”

On the anticipation front, writer Osman whipped his followers into excitement with a teaser on his Instagram page yesterday (May 28) for the forthcoming trailer of the screen adaptation of his acclaimed book series.

One anxious supporter disclosed: “I am nervous for the release of the film because I love the characters so much. I worry if it doesn’t feel right it will affect how I read the fifth book.”

In contrast, another fan quipped humorously: “My husband has booked our holiday abroad during the week this drops on Netflix. Seriously considering divorce.”
