Amazon’s Fire TV Stick gadgets are incredibly popular streaming devices thanks to their ease of use and affordability. Plug one into any HDMI slot on any TV and hook it up to the Wi-Fi, and you have a world of entertainment at your fingertips with the ability to sign in to all your favourite streaming services.
However, this looks set to change for some Fire TV Stick owners, as it has been reported that as of next month, some of Amazon’s devices will no longer be able to stream Netflix.
As reported by PC Welt (via PC World), Amazon has sent out emails to some of its Fire TV Stick customers informing them that as of June 3, 2025, you won’t be able to stream Netflix on first generation Fire TV devices
That means there are three affected devices on which the Netflix app will soon stop working:
- Amazon Fire TV Stick (2014)
- Amazon Fire TV Stick with Alexa voice remote (2014)
- Amazon Fire TV (2014)
That means the first ever Fire TV Sticks are about to lose access to the biggest streaming service in the world. If you still have one of the above devices, then good on you for using it for more than a decade, but if you regularly watch Netflix then it may well finally be time to upgrade.
Amazon has not given a reason for its decision, though PC Welt theorised it could be to do with the fact Netflix uses the AV1 codec to stream higher picture quality on some of its plans, a standard these 2014 Fire TVs don’t support.
That means if you subscribe to a Premium Netflix plan that offers perks such as 4K resolution, these older Fire TV gadgets wouldn’t support it. Netflix has likely decided that rather than have customers receiving (perhaps unknowingly) a worse service than what they are paying for, it’s better to simply cut the cord.
If you think you’re affected by this change, or even if you’re not but your Fire TV Stick is a little long in the tooth, you could consider upgrading to one of the latest models.
At the time of writing the regular Fire TV Stick HD is on sale for £29.99, down from £39.99, a good price for a streamer that comes with the handy Alexa Voice Remote.
If you want all the bells and whistles, the Fire TV Stick 4K costs £59.99 and adds 4K support along with Wi-Fi 6 compatibility, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos and HDR10+ support – basically what you’ll want if you have an all-singing, all-dancing TV set up with a soundbar and other accessories.
You can even opt for the Fire TV Stick 4K Max, which for £69.99 adds in Wi-Fi 6E and Amazon’s new Fire TV Ambient Experience, where your TV can display museum art or photography and see your calendar, weather and other apps in a homescreen-style setting.
It’s also the only Fire TV Stick with the official Xbox app, allowing you to play games using Xbox Game Pass Ultimate via cloud gaming.
