Netflix now streaming 'twisted' thriller that's 'better than most Hollywood movies'

Netflix’s latest offering, a South Korean thriller that has been receiving glowing reviews from viewers, is now available for streaming.

Launched last Friday (21st March), this captivating mystery has quickly garnered a dedicated fanbase.

Directed by Yeon Sang-ho of the acclaimed zombie hit Train to Busan, his newest film presents a riveting tale of two characters with opposing perspectives delving into a harrowing missing person investigation.

The official synopsis reveals: “A pastor who believes in divine revelation and a detective haunted by visions pursue a missing person case – exposing their own demons in the process.”

Netflix has been instrumental in popularising K-dramas and Korean films, propelling shows like the intense Squid Game to global success, so this latest edge-of-your-seat Korean production is not one to miss.

An enthusiastic IMDb review proclaims that Revelations is “better than most Hollywood offerings”.

The admirer elaborates: “The story takes many twists and turns and lines between good and bad are blurred, which of course is far more to how life actually is than most of Hollywood’s superhero style movies.

“The acting is superb, they put western actors to shame [and] I cried at the end.”

Another commendation on the movie-centric social network Letterboxd reads: “While it does not reach the level of Oldboy, Parasite, or Train to Busan, it is still a very good thriller that kept me hooked the entire time!

“The story was well-crafted, following the Korean tradition of incorporating many crazy twists and emotional dilemmas, all while delivering some thrilling scenes and asking how far people will go in the name of their religion.”

A rave review on the same site read: “A chilling South Korean crime thriller full of dark twists and clever turns.

“It’s easily one of the year’s finest films. Yeon Sang-ho’s direction delivers disturbing crimes in abundance.

“Revelations is like The Wailing, Zodiac, Memories of Murder, Prisoners, I Saw the Devil, The Call, and Officer Black Belt all rolled into one sick film.”

The review went further, showering acclaim on lead actor Ryu Jun-yeol for his “unhinged” portrayal of pastor Sung Min-chan, while Shin Hyun-been was commended for her “compelling” role as “pretty and determined Detective Yeon-hee”.

Wrapping up a sterling endorsement, it said, “In all, Revelations is a gripping 122 minutes that doesn’t waste a minute as the story gets increasingly complex.”

One final user enthused: “The movie was longer than I expected it to be, but not in a draggy way.

“This was absolutely incredible. Every time I thought ‘OK maybe now it’s over’ there was still 20 minutes left.

“And damn, what a satisfying ending. Really one of the craziest movies I’ve seen in a long time.”

Thriller enthusiasts are hereby advised not to miss this twisted masterpiece hailing from South Korea.
