Netflix 'moves ahead' with sequel to hit movie after smashing four-year record

Netflix is reportedly in discussions with Sony Pictures to create a follow-up to the streaming giant’s blockbuster animated feature KPop Demon Hunters, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

During the past week, the fantasy-musical phenomenon has become Netflix’s most-viewed original film ever, smashing the four-year record previously held by the action thriller Red Notice.

The production currently boasts an extraordinary audience of 236 million viewers within its initial 91 days of availability.

The movie’s soundtrack has equally become a cultural phenomenon, marking the first occasion where four original compositions have simultaneously featured in the Billboard Hot 100.

The storyline centres on three K-Pop performers, Rumi (portrayed by Arden Cho), Mira (May Hong) and Zoey (Ji-young Yoo), collectively known as Huntr/x, who covertly combat supernatural forces to preserve an ancient mystical barrier.

When rival ensemble the Saja Boys are exposed as malevolent spirits masquerading to pilfer Huntr/x’s abilities, the trio must harness their combined talents – and celebrity status – to launch a fresh chart-topper and reveal their sinister scheme.

Speculation regarding a possible KPop Demon Hunters continuation initially surfaced shortly following the picture’s debut on 20th June.

Filmmaker Maggie Kang revealed to Screen Rant her enthusiasm for a sequel, stating “there are a lot of pockets that we can explore”.

Co-director Chris Appelhans also chimed in, telling People: “There are so many unanswered questions, in a good way, and so many avenues that could be their own story.”

In July, The Wrap revealed that Netflix was eyeing not just one but two sequels, as well as a spin-off TV series, a short film and a stage musical.

Netflix Films chairman Dan Lin expressed to Newsweek that the streaming giant is “excited to explore what could be the next adventure for Huntrix.

“KPDH’s success comes from its original, fresh story so if we do embark on a sequel, we would want to take our time to make sure that any future stories we tell with our favorite demon hunters retains the flair and uniqueness of the first film.”

The Express has approached Netflix for further comment.

Millions of fans are already buzzing about what the future might hold for Netflix’s latest franchise.

One viewer shared on Reddit: “To quote Zoey, ‘it’s so obvious.’ Best of luck to Kang and her crew, and I can’t wait to see what they cook up next!

“(Hopefully in theaters – the Sing Along was loads of fun, and quite profitable for the two days it was out.)”

Another speculated: “I hope they go the ‘Godfather, Part 2’ route and make it both a sequel and a prequel. I’d love to see the origins of how Gwi-Ma become king of the demons.”
