Netflix fans hail 'underrated thriller' that has left viewers 'traumatised'

Netflix has an abundance of films to enjoy, but fans have recently been left “traumatised” over a 1995 psychological thriller. Starring Sigourney Weaver as a famous criminal psychologist, Copycat has been hailed by fans as “underrated” and “one of the best serial killer movies”. The film’s plot follows two female leads as they join forces to hunt down a serial killer who is committing copycat crimes after famous murders. Reception was generally positive at the time it was released, and it won the Audience Award and a Special Mention at the Cognac Festival du Film Policier. Copycat was also nominated for a Saturn Award for Best Music.

You only need to look at fan reviews on IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes to find out that the film has widespread praise. With an encouraging 76 per cent approval rating, one person said on Rotten Tomatoes: “Very, very underrated thriller. I’ve seen it a few times – it’s not as good as The Silence of the Lambs, but it’s the same type of movie and really pretty good – if you liked Lambs, watch this, you’ll enjoy it. Beware – a little scary, graphic violence.”

On IMDb, one person said in their review: “I was so hooked by it, and every twist had me on the edge of my seat. It is both terrifying AND well-made. And the score! I can’t even begin to say how beautiful and haunting the music is. This is one movie I am very happy to own.”

Another also commented: “This movie popped up in my Netflix algorithm. I’m flabbergasted that I did not know this movie existed. WOW…it’s got everything you want from a psychological crime thriller.”

The film, which had a budget of $27 million, earned an impressive $79 million at the box office. It also stars Dermot Mulroney, William McNamara, Harry Connick Jr, and Will Patton. It’s also worth noting that the film is not based on a true story.

However, one particular scene during the opening few minutes has left viewers “traumatised” since it landed on Netflix. One person reacted to the clip online: “I remember seeing this in theaters. I was freaked out in public restrooms for months!”

Another also similarly echoed: “This scene TRAUMATISED me when I saw it as a teenager, for years and years. I’d always be looking up when using the public bathroom to make sure it didn’t happen to me.”

Copycat is now available on Netflix.
