Netflix drops trailer for 'best film of the year' that already has 98% rating

A period drama hailed as ‘the best film of the year’ is arriving on Netflix on November 21.

The streaming platform has unveiled the mesmerising trailer for Train Dreams, a poignant adaptation of Denis Johnson’s beloved novella.

The story centres on young orphan Robert Grainier, whose journey takes place against the backdrop of sweeping transformation in 20th-century America.

Robert matures into a logger contributing to the expansion of the country’s railroads.

Following his marriage to wife Gladys and the establishment of their young family, the lead character’s life takes a devastating twist that forces him to reassess his place in the world, reports the Mirror.

Netflix’s synopsis continues: “An ode to a vanishing way of life, an ever-evolving world, and to the extraordinary possibilities that exist within even the most simple of existences, Train Dreams captures a time and place that are now long gone, and the people who built a bridge to a future they could only dream of.”

The production was co-written and helmed by Academy Award nominee Clint Bentley, who previously co-penned the critically acclaimed 2023 drama Sing Sing.

Train Dreams features a stellar ensemble with Golden Globe nominee Joel Edgerton taking the lead role as Robert, whilst Oscar nominee Felicity Jones portrays his wife.

Sinners actor Nathaniel Arcand rounds out the cast, joined by Clifton Collins Jr. , John Diehl and Paul Schneider.

The period drama is set to land on Netflix in a matter of weeks, having made its debut at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year in January. Critics have already had their say and the feedback has been resoundingly positive.

Rotten Tomatoes critics awarded the drama an impressive 98% rating, with the consensus stating: “A gorgeous meditation on America, ably shouldered by one of Joel Edgerton’s very best performances, Train Dreams takes on mythic proportions while maintaining an intimate emotional delicacy.”

Another reviewer on the film-rating platform enthused: “This is one of the great films of the year. In time, it will become one of the best in a decade, then one of the movies that people speak of when asked what inspired them in their life. It is a masterpiece.”

Meanwhile, the Daily Beast hailed Train Dreams as the “best film of this year’s Sundance Film Festival”.
