Nail-biting moment Aer Lingus plane is tossed around by 50mph winds in Storm Pia

A plane was forced to abandon its landing after it was battered by 50mph crosswinds.

The twin-propellor plane was an Aer Lingus flight coming into Birmingham Airport amid Storm Pia, having already been diverted from Leeds Bradford Airport.

The high winds, around 50mph, caused intense turbulence for passengers and just 100ft from the tarmac the plane pulled back.

The second go-around didn’t appear to be easier, with the plane struggling to stay level. But the Aer Lingus flight managed to touch down, delivering all 78 passengers safely.

Storm Pia has seen strong winds hit the UK, with gusts of up to 115mph in the Airngorms and 81mph in Northumberland.

This was not the first flight impacted, with all of British Airways short-haul flights grounded and postponed.

The storm has also caused major disruption on the railways, with services by Avanti and Eurostar affected and Euston Station in London cancelling all services.

There have also been power outages in the northeast, Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, impacting about 40,000 households.

Trees have been falling due to the storm, with roads being blocked in Sheffield and homes being damaged in Nottingham.

Storm Pia has not had solely negative effects, however, with record amounts of electricity having been generated by wind turbines.

In just half an hour this morning, turbines generated 21.8 gigawatts of electricity and supplied 56percent of all the power that was being used from the National Grid.
