Mushrooms are one of the most common kitchen staples due to their high fiber content. But their high water content can quickly turn them from firm and flavourful to slimy and unusable. An expert has shared a simple storage hack that can keep the mushrooms fresh for seven days.
By switching out supermarket packaging for a simple paper bag and following a few easy steps, you can maximise their longevity and reduce food waste. Mushroom expert Elliot Webb from Urban Farm-It explained that leaving them in the plastic packaging can accelerate the spoilage. He said: “Mushrooms are incredibly delicate due to their high water content, which makes proper storage essential to maintaining their freshness.
“One of the most common mistakes people make is leaving them in the plastic packaging they come in, as this traps moisture and accelerates spoilage.
“Instead, transferring them to a paper bag lined with kitchen towel provides better airflow and absorbs excess moisture, significantly extending their shelf life.”
The expert shared that while whole mushrooms stored this way in the fridge can last up to seven days, compared to sliced mushrooms which typically last only one to two days.
Keeping them whole and avoiding pre-washing them is key to ensuring they don’t deteriorate too quickly.
On making the most of mushrooms that are no longer at their freshest, Mr Webb added: “If your mushrooms are starting to soften, don’t throw them away.
“They are still perfect for cooked dishes like risotto, stir-fries, or soups. Cooking not only enhances their flavour but also prevents unnecessary food waste.”
