The tearful mother of a young schoolgirl killed when a Land Rover crashed through an outdoor tea party has said she is haunted by the horrific scene “every day”. Selena Lau and Nuria Sajjad were both eight years old when they died at the Study Prep School in Wimbledon, south west London on July 6 last year.
Selena’s parents Jessie and Franky made an emotional appeal this morning, adding that they are “suffering everyday”.
Speaking to Vanessa Feltz on TalkTV, Jessie said: “It comes flashing back every day, every night, and I wish that was me lying there not her, I wish I could swap with her, I’d give anything I have to have her back.”
Dad Franky says he keeps asking himself if “there was anything we could have done to make that not happen”.
He added: “If it rained, they wouldn’t be having the picnic outside. All these different scenarios, every day.”
The tragic scene unfolded after the 4×4 smashed through a fence and into the picnic before ploughing into the school building. Police and paramedics raced to the scene, including 30 police vehicles and 15 ambulances.
A seven-month-old baby was also one of over 15 others injured as they played outside.
Jessie said she was left confused by the call from the school receptionist, telling her to get to the school immediately.
“She was like, ‘Just come, something really serious has happened at school’,” she said.
“I thought it may be a broken arm, I didn’t expect anything else. I was thinking why don’t you take her to the hospital, it takes me an hour to get there.
“It doesn’t make sense to wait for me to go to the hospital. And then I start crying.”
Meanwhile, Nuria – who had just read out her “hopes and dreams” for the summer holidays – was fatally injured and she died in hospital three days later.
Her family described her as the “light of our lives”, saying she “embodied joy, kindness and generosity”.
In an update last Thursday, a Met Police spokesperson said: “A 46-year-old woman from Wimbledon who was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving is currently released under investigation.
“Enquiries are ongoing.”
