New parents often fret over their baby’s sleeping habits, ensuring they’re getting enough rest, are comfortable in their cot, and aren’t getting into dangerous positions during the night.

This concern can lead to multiple nightly checks on the baby, a habit that seems to extend to our pets as well. One mum was left stunned when she saw her German Shepherd dog enter her child’s room, and what happened next left her even more surprised.

Jeannie Russell shared a video on TikTok featuring footage from the baby monitor set up in her child’s room, aimed at the cot so she could keep an eye on her baby throughout the night.

However, upon reviewing the footage one morning, she was astounded to see her 10-year-old German Shepherd approach the cot and watch over her baby for a moment, just as she would have done.

She captioned the video: “Watch my 10-year-old German Shepherd check on ‘his’ baby.”

Viewers of the video were equally moved by the touching interaction. Many admitted to being brought to tears by the dog’s gesture, while others hailed the pooch as “the best in the world”.

One person commented: “I’m not crying, you’re crying.” Another person commented: “They truly are the best dogs in the world.”

A third remarked: “Protecting his little baby! Adorable!”

Are German Shepherd dogs good with children?

Pet Plan suggests that German Shepherds are generally considered to be excellent family pets, known for their gentle nature towards children and other animals.

However, like any dog breed, German Shepherds require proper training and socialisation before they can be deemed safe around infants.

German Shepherds are not naturally aggressive dogs, but their protective instincts can make them wary when encountering strangers. They can also develop behavioural issues if they are left alone for extended periods or don’t receive sufficient exercise.

These dogs typically enjoy the company of their family, making them ideal family pets. However, if left alone for too long, they may also struggle with separation anxiety.

Always conduct thorough research before committing to any breed of dog, and consider adopting from a shelter rather than purchasing.
