Mould will stay off walls if you have 1 cheap natural repellent in your home

Mould can quickly creep into a home during the colder seasons, but there is a simple way to prevent it without having to switch on a dehumidifier. Homes are more prone to mould at this time of year since we are more likely to keep the windows closed and dry laundry indoors, which cause condensation to build up on surfaces. Condensation is moisture that forms when warm air touches a cold surface, and if it is not cleaned away it will eventually turn into mould as spores can only survive in a damp environment.

A simple way to prevent dampness is to use a dehumidifier, but they can cost hundreds of pounds and can drive up the cost of energy bills if they are plugged in all day.  Instead, one expert at Happy House Plants has shared there is a cheaper way to keep mould away, as certain plants can purify the air to stop spores growing.

The expert said: “Getting a dehumidifier may be an option and have some effects, but houseplants are natural, more effective, and prettier alternative to remove that indoor humidity.”

How do plants stop mould growing inside a home?

Tropical houseplants typically grow on the rainforest floor, where they have adapted to absorb moisture from the air, as dense tree foliage tends to block most of the rainfall.

When these plants are placed inside the home, they will absorb any excess humidity which will stop condensation, dampness and therefore mould from being able to grow.

What kind of plants prevent mould?

Cheese plants

Cheese plants are one of the most popular houseplants to own, but not many people realise it will help pull moisture out of the air.

They need indirect sunlight and love a humid environment, so are best kept in a bathroom or kitchen so they can soak up any excess steam.

Areca Palms

Areca palms are one of the best plants to naturally prevent moisture as they absorb a high amount of humidity, and are also known to remove toxins from the air so can help stop spores growing.

This beautiful plant releases a lot of oxygen so is best kept in bedrooms to help you sleep better at night. It is also fairly easy to care for as long as you keep it away from windowsills and do not overwater it.

Aglaonema Pink Stars

These pretty plants are known for their vibrant pink and green leaves, so will brighten up a home as well as absorb any excess moisture.

They are also low maintenance and perfect for first time houseplant owners as they do not require a lot of sunlight. You can place it anywhere in the home and as long as you water it occasionally, it should stay healthy throughout the colder seasons.
