‘Most popular’ destination in Europe for Britons named – and it’s not Spain | Travel News | Travel

The most popular destination for  British travellers has been revealed – and it’s not the sunny islands of Greece, or the romantic city break of Paris. According to analysis of Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) data by Air Advisor, the most popular place for Brits to fly to and from is located in Ireland.

In previous years, Palma De Mallorca in Spain and Amsterdam claimed the top spots, but this year it’s Dublin taking the crown.  Every three months, the CAA publishes Aviation Trends data covering key metrics that summarise commercial aviation activity at the United Kingdom’s airports and further afield. Between January and June 2025, more than 4.8 million people flew between the UK and Dublin.

The second most popular destination was Amsterdam, with 4.1 people flying to and from within the same time period.

AirAdvisor CEO Anton Radchenko said: “Ireland is an extremely popular destination for UK travellers due to the two countries’ historic connections. It’s a busy route for holidaymakers between the nations’ major cities and also people visiting family members based either side of the Irish Sea.

“Amsterdam remains a popular city break spot for UK travellers while those looking for year-round sun often opt for destinations like Dubai and Tenerife.”

Dublin is just an hour and 15 minutes away from the UK on a plane, making it the perfect place for a quick weekend away. It’s also a very walkable city, so you won’t need to waste money on taxis or public transport.

The capital of Ireland has plenty to explore, so you’ll never be bored. From Trinity College (Dublin’s oldest University) through to Dublin Castle and St Patrick’s Cathedral there’s a lot for history buffs to sink their teeth into.

Of course you can’t go to Ireland without sampling a pint of Guinness, and Dublin is home to the Guinness Storehouse, where you can learn all about the brewing process and the history of Ireland’s most famous beer before enjoying a pint yourself.

Top international destinations to and from UK airports between January and June 2025

Dublin, Republic of Ireland – 4.8 million
Amsterdam, The Netherlands – 4.1 million
Alicante, Spain – 3 million
Dubai, United Arab Emirates – 3 million
Malaga, Spain – 2.8 million
Tenerife, Spain – 2.7 million
Barcelona, Spain – 2.3 million
Faro, Portugal – 2 million
New York, United States of America – 1.8 million
Doha, Qatar – 1.7 million
Madrid, Spain – 1.6 million
Arrecife, Spain – 1.6 million
