Overcrowded holiday destinations have dominated headlines throughout the summer, with reports of anti-tourism demonstrations capturing widespread attention. While Majorcan beaches may appear increasingly packed, it’s actually a UK tourist hotspot that claims the title of Europe’s most congested attraction.
Rather unexpectedly, research conducted by The Thinking Traveller revealed that Edinburgh Castle ranked as the continent’s busiest destination. Meanwhile, Buckingham Palace, amongst the nation’s most historically significant and recognisable landmarks, secured second position on the rankings. Several Tripadvisor reviewers described Edinburgh Castle as “overpriced”, whilst other guests felt they hadn’t received value for money, finding the experience “underwhelming”.
Joe_Railwayman commented: “An underwhelming visit. We found certain areas to be very overcrowded and the cafe very expensive.
“Maps were unclear but may have been a different experience if had upgraded to include audio guide or tour.”
Caz881975 remarked: “Paying over £70 for three Adults and two Children (one Senior) we thought that it was overpriced.
“We explored most areas however, in general, I thought it was a place with lots of good viewing points for Edinburgh.”
Conversely, more positive reviews described the 11th Century architectural wonder as “very moving”.
Emwhitnall wrote: “There is so much to explore within in the castle walls, I’d recommend getting the audioguide to make the most of the experience.
“It was also very moving exploring the war memorial, dedicated to all those who have served for Scotland.
“Make sure to time your visit if you want to watch the Mons Meg cannon firing as it only happens once a day.”
Jason F commented: “What an amazing castle! So much to see and do. We spent half the day here, enjoying the Cafe and many exhibits on display.
“The views from the castle, of Edinburgh, are amazing.”
Fellow tourists praised the fortress’s spectacular panoramic vistas across Edinburgh, with the steep climb leading to the UNESCO World Heritage Site proving worthwhile for the breathtaking scenery.
