An award-winning comedy hailed as ‘the most important film of 2023’ is currently available to watch at home.
Greta Gerwig’s billion-dollar comedy, Barbie is ready to purchase on various streaming platforms, including Prime Video and Apple TV.
The blockbuster sensation debuted two years ago and immediately captivated viewers. It portrays a live-action version of the legendary doll living her ideal life in Barbieland, alongside Ken.
Their lives take a dramatic turn when they venture into the real world and uncover harsh realities about human existence. This revelation propels Barbie on a journey of self-discovery, a stark contrast from her idyllic life in Barbieland.
Oscar nominee Margot Robbie headlines the cast as Barbie, with Ryan Gosling playing her Ken. They are accompanied by Hollywood titans, including America Ferrera, Issa Rae, Will Ferrell and a brief cameo from pop sensation Dua Lipa.
The film achieved colossal box office triumph, raking in over $1 billion globally. It also garnered eight Academy Award nominations, including a nomination for the prestigious Best Picture category.
However, Barbie only clinched an Oscar for Best Original Song, awarded to Billie Eilish for her chart-topping single, ‘What Was I Made For?’
Ferrera impressively secured a nomination for Best Supporting Actress, while Gosling has been recognised with a nod for Best Supporting Actor. Gerwig and her co-writer Noah Baumbach have also been shortlisted for the Best Adapted Screenplay award.
Despite playing the lead role, Robbie was overlooked for an Oscar nomination, sparking widespread disappointment among fans. Many felt she was unjustly denied the award, with others suggesting that Gerwig should have received another nomination for the Best Director accolade.
One disgruntled viewer vented on X, previously known as Twitter: “GretaGerwig and #MargotRobbie were robbed. #Barbie was the most important film of 2023.
“It took the issue of women’s equality and made it entertaining and accessible, but most importantly, it made audiences “feel” and appreciate the awfulness of injustice.”
Despite the controversy, the film continues to receive high praise from fans who encourage others to watch it. “Barbie is an instant classic in history as it mixes impressive storytelling elements and hilarious comedy,” lauded one Rotten Tomatoes user.
Another cinema-goer commented: “My friends and I laughed throughout the film! It’s super sweet and doesn’t take itself too seriously, but in the times it does the moments hit well. It’s a great, feel-good film with a lot of heart in a positive message.”
Meanwhile, a Google Reviewer shared: “I was blown away by the film and it made me both laugh and cry,” and another hailed the comedy as “a mesmerising and modern masterpiece.”
Barbie is available to purchase on Prime Video, Apple TV and Sky.
