Most expensive dog is rare pet that chooses a ‘favourite’ person

The most expensive dog breed to own has been revealed, with total lifetime costs typically exceeding £16,250. Recent research analysed 173 dog breeds based on their initial purchase cost, insurance, food, and grooming expenses throughout their expected lifespan, with the Romanian Mioritic Shepherd Dog coming out as the most expensive.

Rather unsurprisingly, this research, conducted by Pet Insurance Deals, determined that bigger dogs are much more costly than their smaller counterparts. For example, the Romanian Shepherd requires approximately £5,789.93 worth of food over its lifetime, compared to just £610.93 for a Chihuahua. However, while they are a rather costly breed, there are certainly benefits to owning a Romanian Mioritic Shepherd Dog.

The American Kennel Club describes this breed as: “Loyal, reliable, independent, and fiercely protective, he is friendly and devoted to his family but very mistrusting of strangers.”

They added: “Its favourite place is always very close to its favourite person.” As puppies, they typically stay with a pack that has accepted them, which can be a group of humans.

While loyal, the Romanian Shepherd is also quite independent and lively. It certainly requires daily walks and exercise, so it is perhaps not the best breed for anyone looking for a chill and relaxed dog.

Although they might be expensive to own, one way you may be able to save money with this breed is that they typically do not require dog beds and will choose their own place to sleep.

And they aren’t the only breed that can be rather pricey. The second most expensive breed is the Hamiltonstovare, with a lifetime cost of £14,951.24. This was then followed by the Estrela Mountain Dog, at £14,778.13.

Meanwhile, the cheapest dog to own is the English Toy Spaniel, with lifetime costs of £5,163.83.
