Tucked away in the depths of South Devon lies the captivating village of South Pool, a true treasure offering picturesque countryside charm, historic buildings, and convenient links to the region’s stunning shoreline.

CN Traveller crowned it Britain’s most beautiful village in 2023, describing its tranquility as ‘another world’ compared with the bustle of Salcombe a couple of miles downwater.

The village has experienced a boom in online popularity, largely due to the breathtaking beaches nearby. Just a half hour drive away, Bantham Beach has been hailed by one visitor as the “most beautiful beach without leaving the UK”, for instance.

However, some residents would prefer to preserve South Pool’s hidden status, with one local playfully commenting: “Shhh, don’t tell anyone! We locals want to keep it a secret!”, reports Devon Live.

South Pool embodies a quintessentially English charm: time appears frozen on its twisting, narrow lanes and its historic stone cottages form a picture postcard scene.

Among its most prized landmarks is the Church of St Cyriac and St Julietta, a Grade I listed structure from the 13th century.

This church is renowned for its remarkable medieval design, featuring a beautiful Norman font and an intricately crafted rood screen.

Village pub The Millbrook Inn is also central to South Pool’s appeal, offering warm hospitality and an impressive array of local ales and ciders.

The inn’s charming interior, adorned with open fires and wooden beams, provides a snug atmosphere where both locals and tourists can savour a hearty meal or a pint.

Standing at the head of South Pool creek, which stretches all the way to Salcombe Estuary, the village offers plenty of outdoor pursuits including sailing, kayaking and angling.

Its surrounding scenery of rolling hills and green fields also makes it a haven for ramblers and nature lovers.

South Pool’s prime location makes it a perfect starting point for venturing into other attractions in the South Devon region. Neighbouring towns such as Salcombe, Kingsbridge, and Dartmouth boast a variety of shops, restaurants, and cultural experiences that are popular with holidaymakers.

Whether you’re in search of a tranquil getaway, outdoor escapades, or a taste of traditional English village life, South Pool has something to cater to everyone.
