Mom killed in Westwood supermarket crash wasn’t scheduled to work but ‘selflessly’ picked up shift

The grocery store employee tragically killed in a horrific crash at a Westwood supermarket last week wasn’t originally scheduled to work at that time but picked up a colleague’s shift, her devastated family revealed.

Mother-of-five Deris Renoj was killed Feb. 5 when a 92-year-old driver barreled into the 99 Ranch Market in Los Angeles, killing three people and injuring six more.

Renoj “selflessly” took a shift from a co-worker scheduled for that morning, even though she was supposed to close the store, People reported.

“Her kindness, dependability, and willingness to always help others defined who she was right until the very end,” read a note on a GoFundMe page launched to help pay for funeral and memorial expenses.

Renoj’s family said she died just five days after her 42nd birthday, leaving behind five children and six grandchildren.

“Just days before her passing, we celebrated her birthday by cutting her a cake alongside her sister and nephew whom she shares birthdays with,” her family wrote.

“She asked that we throw a big party for all three next year, a wish we will now honor without her physical presence. Birthdays will never be the same. Holidays will never be the same. Our lives have changed forever, and our hearts will always feel incomplete without her,” they continued.

“Though we are heartbroken, we hold onto our faith, trusting that she is now resting in God’s eternal peace. Her love lives on through her family and everyone whose life she touched.”

The other two victims have been identified as 28-year-old Zih Dao and 52-year-old Leonel Mateo. Six others were also injured in the crash, which happened after the elderly driver hit a cyclist and then smashed into the store at high speed.

The California Post exclusively obtained video of the crash‘s deadly aftermath.

The driver in the crash has yet to be identified. The Los Angeles Police Department told CBS News that she would not face charges. It’s unclear if she suffered a medical event that caused her to crash.

Police are also looking into whether there was a mechanical issue with the driver’s car, CBS News reported.
