MLB star Tommy Pham reacts to Gavin Newsom’s SAT remarks

Tommy Pham made it clear Wednesday he’s one of the many who were irked by Gavin Newsom’s recent controversial SAT score comments.

On his Instagram Stories, the former Padres outfielder posted a screen grab of a clip of the California governor appearing to try to relate to a predominately Black audience by sharing with them that he once earned an underwhelming SAT score.

“I’m not trying to impress you,” Newsom said in the video while chatting with Atlanta mayor Andre Dickens in front of a large crowd over the weekend, “I’m just trying to impress upon you, ‘I’m like you. I’m not better than you.’ I’m a 960 SAT guy.”

Pham wrote in a caption on the footage that he “can’t relate” to what Newsom was spouting.

“I was a straight A student and scored well on my SAT,” the 12-year MLB veteran said. “He thinks black ppl are dumb.”

Pham then went on to share a screen shot of a separate video where Newsom told an interviewer he once “read a 260 page book in an hour and a half.”

Pham was hardly the only one bothered by Newsom’s remarks. Several Republicans blasted him on X — as did rapper Nicki Minaj.

“His way of bonding with black ppl is to tell them how stupid he is & that he can’t read,” Minaj wrote in a post.

“He’s not just TELLING them that they’re all probably stupid & probably can’t read, he’s LITERALLY SLOW-ING-DOWN-HIS-SPEECH to make them understand the words that are coming out of his mouth!!!!” she added.

“As if they’re children!!!! That means he REALLY BELIEVES they’re slow. He’s not just saying it—he didn’t misspeak!!!! He BELIEVES it!!!! Do ya love it?!?!! Do ya just love it, black ppl?!????”

For Newsom’s part, he said in a statement on his social media page Monday that he was just trying to talk “about my lifelong struggle with dyslexia.”
