Milk will grow ‘bacteria’ faster if you make key mistake at supermarket

There has long been debate among homeowners about the best place to store milk to keep it fresh, whether in the fridge door or tucked away on the back shelf. However, it turns out that the real problem may begin long before the bottle ever reaches the refrigerator. Experts are now warning that milk can spoil much faster than people expect due to a simple mistake that is often made and usually goes unnoticed.

This everyday habit, carried out without a second thought, creates the perfect conditions for bacteria to multiply, accelerating spoilage before the milk is even chilled. Surprisingly, the slip-up occurs right in the supermarket. Making a small change to the way you shop could therefore help keep milk fresher, safer, and tasting better for longer.

Home experts at Real Simple say the main mistake shoppers make is picking up milk first. As it sits in your cart while you continue shopping, it warms slightly, providing bacteria with the perfect opportunity to multiply and start spoiling the milk.

By the time it reaches your fridge, it may already be on the fast track to going bad. They explained: “Complete all your grocery shopping, then swing by the milk section to pick up your gallon just before you head to the checkout.

“This way, the milk has less time exposed to warmer air and will be less likely to start growing harmful bacteria.”

How to spot if your milk has gone bad

Spoiled milk can often be identified by changes in smell, texture, and appearance. Cow’s milk that has gone off usually has a sour odour, reported Milk And More.

Lumpy or curdled milk is another clear sign that it is spoiled, while discolouration or separation also indicates it has gone bad.  Plant-based milk can be harder to judge, as some separation is normal.

However, a bloated carton, an unusual smell, an off-taste, or a slimy texture are all signs that it has spoiled. Paying attention to these signs can help prevent using milk that may cause illness.

To prevent bacterial growth, all milk should be stored at a temperature below 40°F (4C). If your “shelf-stable non-dairy milk” is unopened, you can store it in the refrigerator door to keep it chilled, but only until you open the carton.
