Michail Antonio’s former wife reportedly travelled hundreds of miles to be with him in hospital after he was involved in a car crash on Saturday.
Antonio was taken to a central London hospital following the single-car collision near Theydon Bois, Essex. The news was confirmed by West Ham United after images on social media purported to show the Ferrari he was driving at the time of the accident.
The Hammers revealed that Antonio was conscious and in a stable condition, while The Telegraph have reported that he suffered a broken leg. It has also been reported that he was trapped in the wreckage for nearly an hour and had to be freed by firefighters.
Antonio’s ex-wife Debbie travelled down from Manchester to be with the forward in hospital after hearing that he had been involved in a road traffic accident, according to the Daily Mail.
The couple met in 2011 and quickly formed a strong relationship, growing from best friends to husband and wife. They eventually split up following the birth of their fourth child in 2020.
Meanwhile, the report adds that West Ham bosses remain ‘worried’ about Antonio’s condition, with the 34-year-old being kept under close supervision by medical staff.
Essex Police have appealed for witnesses to come forward with any information they might have about the crash, which took place shortly after midday on Saturday.
The force said in a statement: “Emergency services attended and the driver has been taken to hospital. The vehicle has been recovered and we are no longer on scene.
“An investigation will be carried out by our Roads Policing Unit. If you have any information, CCTV, dash cam or other footage in relation to this incident, then please get in contact with us.
“Please quote incident 605 of 7 December when providing any information to make sure it gets to the right person as quickly as possible. Alternatively, please email the investigating officer, PS Mark Hewitt.”
West Ham issued an update on Antonio’s condition on Saturday evening, saying: “Michail is conscious and communicating and is currently under close supervision at a central London hospital.
“At this difficult time, we kindly ask everyone to respect the privacy of Michail and his family. The club will make no further comment this evening, but will issue a further update in due course.”
