With thunderstorms already causing chaos across the nation, it appears they’re set to continue for some time yet.
The UK has basked in some delightful weather recently, with temperatures soaring beyond 30 degrees Celsius.
Nevertheless, conditions have swiftly shifted, and the weather is now more subdued, bringing risks of torrential downpours and thunderstorms.
The Met Office has cautioned that the storms are set to travel in a northerly direction, meaning that additional areas of England will encounter severe weather.
During this afternoon (Saturday, July 19) the Met Office posted on X: “Heavy, thundery rain will continue to spread northwards this afternoon,” so you may wish to carry a brolly if you’re venturing out.
They added: “Further showers and thunderstorms likely in the west, with some sunny spells between. Feeling warm in any sunshine”.
Judging by the new map, locations such as Newcastle and parts of Scotland are likely to be impacted later today. However, the weather has already started to clear in certain areas of the South.
Issuing advice ahead of the thunderstorms today, the Met Office explained: “Outbreaks of heavy rain and isolated thunderstorms are expected to affect southwest England from Saturday evening, gradually spreading further north and east across Wales during early Sunday morning.
“Further heavy showers and thunderstorms will break out in places across the warning area through the course of Sunday. Rainfall amounts will vary from place to place, but in some areas 30 to 50 mm is likely to fall in a few hours and there is a small chance that a few locations could see 75 mm or more.”
Chief Meteorologist, Andy Page, added: “Intense rainfall will impact parts of the UK as thunderstorms move in from France. A range of severe weather warnings have been issued, including an Amber warning covering southeast England and London. The intense rainfall could lead to surface water flooding as well as frequent lightning and hail too.
“The situation is evolving, and warnings may be changed or added. This weekend is expected to be busy on the roads as more schools in England and Wales break up for the summer holidays, so it’s important people keep up-to-date with the very latest forecast.
“There will be spells of more pleasant weather in parts of the UK through the weekend, with some sunny spells in between systems as they move through.”
