Meghan Markle's 'immersive' role as 'shy' Prince Harry watches Texas birthday surprise

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry made a surprise visit to a family in Uvalde, Texas, on Saturday, and they looked like they were “part of the family,” one body language expert said.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex met with the Garcia family, who lost grandmother Irma at the scene of the Uvalde school mass shooting in 2022.

Irma’s husband, John, died just days later from what their family believes to be a broken heart.

Irma’s nephew, also named John, revealed that Harry and Meghan paid a surprise visit to their house after Meghan kept in touch with his family following the tragic shooting.

John posted photos on X of the royal couple inside his home, writing in one post: “They’re such a beautiful couple and I’m so blessed, so glad they came to check up on the family.”

John also posted a video of Harry and Meghan singing ‘Happy Birthday’ to his mom.

Body language expert Judi James said exclusively to Daily Express US that Meghan seemed to take on a very “immersive” role in the occasion.

James said: “Harry stands at the back of the group here, suggesting some shyness, but Meghan has an immersive role, looking like one of the family as she carries the cake and holds it out while singing ‘Happy Birthday.’

“The couple have clearly wanted to act like part of the family here, rather than making it look like a celebrity visit. Meghan is right in the middle of the action while Harry rocks from one foot to the other, which is a signal suggesting he is keen to join in.

“Harry starts with his arms folded but then he places one hand flat onto his upper chest as though covering his heart. One arm forms a barrier gesture here but the other hand on the chest suggests strong emotions, as though he is signaling in a mime that he is close to tears as he watches the birthday celebration starring his wife.”

John wrote in another post on X: “Meghan Markle singing my mom Happy Birthday was the cutest most adorable thing ever, she even bought her a cake.”

John added that it “meant the world” to his family that the Duke and Duchess made a visit to their home.

John said to Hello! Magazine: “It truly meant the world that Harry and Meghan showed up to visit the family, there were lots of tears of joy and heartfelt moments.

“They were the kindest most humble people ever, it was like having family and friends over having an amazing time together they fit right in, we laughed a lot and shared intimate memories together.”

John added: “They keep in touch every other month, sometimes a little longer, but with their busy lives, them visiting truly felt more special.”

Irma had been a teacher at Robb Elementary School when a mass shooting occurred on May 24, 2022, killing 19 students and two teachers.

Irma had sacrificed her own life in order to allow students at the school to get to safety.

Meghan previously paid a visit to Uvalde two days after the shooting, when she laid a bouquet of white roses at a cross for 10-year-old Uziyah Garcia.
