Meghan Markle’s dad has claimed he is in the “same boat” as the King when it comes to one relationship in their lives.
Thomas Markle, 80 , is believed to have not seen his daughter Meghan, 43, since before her 2018 wedding to Prince Harry, 40, after he was caught staging paparazzi photographs at the time.
This move is believed to have fractured their father-and-daughter relationship, which was later worsened after extracts of a letter from Meghan to Thomas were also leaked in the press.
Despite the fact Meghan is now no longer a senior working royal after quitting in 2020 along with her husband Harry, this has not changed the relationship with her father, despite the fact she now lives much closer to him.
Thomas told the Daily Mail before his 80th birthday in July last year that he would love to hear from his daughter and see his grandchildren Prince Archie, five, and Princess Lilibet, three, who he has never met.
He said that he is in the “same boat as the King” on this matter, as it is believed the 76-year-old monarch also has a limited relationship with the children, having only seen them very few times.
Thomas told the Daily Mail: “I’ve never been one for birthdays, but I know the one person I most want to hear from, Meghan, won’t be in touch.
“I would love to meet my grandchildren, but I would be happy with a photograph at this stage.
“They have two grandpas who want to see them, one of whom is the King of England. I never in my 80 years thought I’d be in the same boat as the King.”
The King is reportedly still in contact with Prince Harry and Meghan, who have lived in America for the last five years, despite the relationship having some turbulent times since the Oprah Winfrey interview in 2021, which was followed by a Netflix docuseries and Harry’s memoir Spare.
The monarch last saw the prince in February last year following the 76-year-old’s cancer diagnosis, but has not seen him face-to-face since.
It is not known when the King last saw Prince Harry’s children, however he reportedly speaks to them over the phone.
