Meghan Markle has poked fun at her own trademark troubles in the latest episode of her podcast, Confessions of a Female Founder. The seventh episode of the series was released on Tuesday, with new episodes shared on all podcasting platforms.
The former working royal was joined by the founder of beauty brand Kitsch, Cassandra Morales Thurswell, in her latest episode – with the pair discussing the struggles of building a business. When Cassandra, who Meghan referred to as Cassie throughout the episode, mentioned her brand’s logo evolution, Meghan quipped: “Yes, and also probably much easier to trademark!”
The comment prompted laughter from both of them, with Cassandra enthusiastically agreeing: “So much easier to trademark!”
Meghan’s joke was seemingly in reference to her own trademark struggles with her brand, which is now named ‘As Ever’.
The 43-year-old was previously reportedly told that she needs to amend her trademark application over a series of “errors” with As Ever.
The issue came shortly after the previous name of her lifestyle brand, American Riviera Orchard, also faced trademark issues.
Meghan said the rebranding was due to limitations in what she could sell under the name, given it was linked to a very specific location, the Californian coast.
However, the Telegraph previously reported that official documents reveal the As Ever trademark application could not be verified because a statement confirming intent was left unsigned.
It has also been reported that various categories also needed updating as they were considered “indefinite or too broad” – for example namely “spoons for serving jams and fruit preserves”, “textile napkins” and “crystallised sugar for decoration”.
Meghan released the first episode of Confessions of a Female Founder on April 8, with episodes released every Tuesday.
