Meghan Markle has been criticised by a royal commentator over her “baffling” move to promote her own global brand by making “noise but no buzz”. The Duchess of Sussex has launched a series of new projects this year, including a new show, a new lifestyle brand and a new podcast series.
Aside from that, this year saw Meghan’s big return to social media after she landed her own official Instagram page back in January, as well as a page for her brand, As Ever, later on. The duchess has been frequently posting on her social media to promote her various ventures, while also sharing glimpses of her private life in Montecito, where she resides with husband Prince Harry and their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. Meghan’s latest appearance came this week when she appeared in a new podcast interview with pal and entrepreneur Jamie Kern Lima.
The duchess made various revelations about her private life in the interview. However, it was overshadowed by an image shared showing a gift she sent to her pal a year ago. The gift was accompanied by a card featuring her HRH title, five years after she and Prince Harry agreed not to use them publicly since quitting the Royal Family.
Now The Times’ columnist Hilary Rose had a scathing verdict regarding Meghan’s efforts to establish herself in the business and influencer world. Writing for the outlet, Ms Rose used a sarcastic tone to talk about the duchess’s latest updates.
She said: “Big news from Planet Meg: she’s still out there. In the past few days, we’ve seen HRH, as we know she likes to be called, welling up on YouTube about her children and telling us that she’s not wearing make-up. Fascinating stuff.
“She’s taken to posting tantalising pictures, shot from behind, of the children whose privacy she guarded so fiercely that she could barely admit they’d been born.
“And on a podcast with her friend, she has feigned surprise about a letter written by her husband, about her children, in which they compliment her on her pancakes.”
She then went on to criticise the duchess for her various efforts to promote her business ventures, including talking about her brand’s flower sprinkles on her Netflix show, With Love, Meghan, as well as speaking about her life during her podcast series, Confessions of a Female Founder.
But the commentator said that, despite months of “constant plugging”, it is still not clear what the duchess’s brand “actually is”.
She wrote: “It’s baffling, style with no substance, noise but no buzz. Yet the omens could not have been better.
“Meghan had the world at her feet, hanging on her every word, but, alas, she didn’t have anything interesting to say.
“It’s hard to make a living interviewing other people, as she does on her podcast, if you’re not very interested in other people.”
It comes as the duchess’s friend Jamie Kern Lima praised her for always “showing up”.
Announcing her interview with Meghan, the entrepreneur said: “I’ve never cried so much in an interview, in the best possible way.
“I’m not sure if I’ve ever been more excited for you to see the true and beautiful side of our amazing guest today!”
