Meghan Markle made the decision to give her own wedding speech on her wedding day to Prince Harry back in 2018. Noting that it is unusual for brides to give a speech on their wedding day in the UK, Meghan discussed her major move in the couple’s six-part Netflix docuseries.
As well as giving fans an insight into what she said, Meghan also revealed a joke that she said in her speech – implying that she loves to talk. In the final episode of Harry & Meghan, the 43-year-old revealed that she told her guests why she made the decision to speak, adding that she then told them: “First of all, it’s been a while.”
Recalling how the 7-word joke got a big laugh during their wedding reception, Meghan then continued sharing a part of her speech, adding that she said: “But mostly, I wanted to share a story. A story that I wrote about the man that I love and the way that we met. Let’s call this a modern fairytale.”
She then recalled how she described the pair of them as coming from two different worlds, adding: “Once upon a time there was a girl from LA – some people called her an actress. And there was a boy from London – some people called him a prince.
“All of those people didn’t fully get it because this is the love story of a boy and girl who were meant to be together.”
In the episode, Meghan also revealed how the couple “giggled endlessly” on their first date back in 2016 – with the pair going on a second date the following day.
The couple then tied the knot less than two years later, on May 19, 2018 – just one year before they welcomed their first child.
Meghan and Harry shared that they had made the shock decision to step away from royal duties in January 2020, with their final royal engagement taking place just two months later.
Moving to the US with their son Archie, who was less than a year-old at the time, the pair later welcomed their daughter Lilibet in June 2021. The former actress recently gushed about her husband during her first-ever podcast appearance as a guest alongside host – and her friend – Jamie Kern Lima. Speaking to Jamie, Meghan shared that she believed that they would be married forever, before referring to Harry as “a fox” and “very, very handsome”.
The couple, who now reside in California, are set to celebrate their seventh wedding anniversary on Monday.
