Fans of Meghan Markle believe the Duchess of Sussex has fired back in a “breakfast war” message to Hollywood’s Gwyneth Paltrow with her latest upload of a “re-invented banana split”. It follows the A-list actress’s post on social media of her cooking breakfast in her pyjamas in which she appeared to subtly put the Duchess of Sussex, 43, in her place, according to her fans.
The post came hot on the heels of the Duchess’s latest attempt at getting back on TV with her Netflix series, With Love, Meghan, which was met with mixed reviews. Viewers believed the Goop founder’s simple look was chosen to contrast with Meghan’s heavily contrived and made-up look for her show.
On Sunday, Meghan posted videos on Instagram with her friend Kelly McKee Zajfen eating a snack. Meghan stood behind the camera while Kelly carefully placed blueberries, raspberries and granola on top of a yogurt and jam-covered banana. Meghan captioned the video, “When one of your besties reinvents a banana split for breakfast” and the following videos showed the pair trying the dish.
After watching Meghan’s banana split video a social media user on X wrote: “Omg! Meghan & Kelly try to throw shade back at Gwyneth Paltrow! This is a game they are going to lose.”
Another wrote: “This is the kind of thing my kids would’ve made me as a surprise breakfast when they were 5!!”
A third question the antics in the video: “Why is Meghan Markle in PJs and the friend fully dressed? Did she turn up unannounced? Why are they prepping a single banana for two people and standing to eat it?”
Gwyneth Paltrow’s previous Instagram video showed the actress in her relaxed-wear with her hair unstyled, enjoying a peaceful morning. Fans rushed to comment: “Gwyneth Paltrow continues to throw shade & I’m here for it! No make-up in her actual kitchen!”
Another wrote: “Being as relatable as she can be, in her pjs, hair not styled, no make-up sipping coffee. No one praising her. Just her phone filming. Simple and easy.”
Meghan did not film her series, which has been renewed for a second season, at the home in Montecito, California which she shares with Prince Harry and their children, instead hiring a £6.2million farmhouse.
The eight-part series invited Meghan’s friends to cook with her including celebrity chefs and close friends, such as TV star Mindy Kaling.
Although her children did not appear in the documentary, Meghan talked about Archie and Lilibet throughout the series and how they had helped gather ingredients as she prepared for her cooking and baking.
Despite the first series receiving mixed reviews, the second season will air during autumn 2025.
