Meghan Markle’s restocked items from her brand’s website As Ever sold out within minutes of being available, for the second time, with the shortage of supply reflecting “a lack of confidence in their own product,” a PR consultant has claimed. On June 20, Meghan included only two new products in the inventory, featuring a new apricot spread with and without keepsake packaging, and an orange blossom honey.
There were seven other products from the first launch that were available to buy again, including her viral flower sprinkles on their own, her crepe mix, her herbal teas and organic honey. Just days ago, Meghan said she did not want another fast sell-out that would leave customers “fatigued.”
No figures have yet been released for the number of products sold.
Leading PR consultant, Mark Borkowski, told Newsweek, the situation that unfolded shows low confidence in the brand. He said: “Nobody wants to be left with a load of stock you can’t shift. So it shows to a certain extent a lack of confidence in their own product because if they believed in it, they would go into overproduction or a greater production line.”
“It shows they’re still unsure about the very thing that would seem to be quite successful. Anyone with a rudimentary understanding of supply and demand would think they are surprised by their success.”
Nick Ede, a UK-based brand and culture expert also told the outlet: “Obviously they’ve said they increased the inventory 10 times, but you wonder how large that inventory actually was. You actually want to, as a customer, as a consumer, go onto a website and feel you can buy the product.”
This is despite Meghan Markle telling businesswoman Emma Grede on her podcast last week that consumers would be “fatigued” if products kept selling out.
Meghan, however, will be dropping a new product on her website, in time for the summer.
In an As Ever newsletter, dropped before the launch, Meghan also teased the release of a rosé wine. She wrote in a message directing visitors to sign up on a mailing list: “Our debut Napa Valley rose is launching just in time for summer entertaining.”
The newsletter read: “There’s something else we can’t wait to share – our debut As ever rosé. With soft notes of stone fruit, gentle minerality, and a lasting finish, this bespoke blend is launching just in time for summer entertaining, and will be available for purchase on July 1st.”
