Meghan Markle ‘threatened’ to stay in Canada when Donald Trump was first elected president in 2016, it has been revealed.
Trump is the President Elect and set to retake his seat in the White House next year after beating Kamala Harris in the US election earlier this week.
Meghan and her husband Prince Harry have had their fair share of run ins with Trump over the years, and some experts reckon the couple face a ‘worrying time’ in the wake of the 78-year-old’s victory.
Royal commentator Kinsey Schofield wrote on her Kinsey Schofield Unfiltered YouTube channel: “Newsweek said the election was likely hard for the Sussexes. It was Jack Royston who wrote the months leading up to the election day must have been a difficult time for the Sussexes spent watching from the sidelines in a race where it is clear who they want to win.
“I had forgotten that Meghan threatened to stay in Canada in 2016 if Trump was elected when she was talking to a late night talk show.
“That was just months before Trump was inevitably elected.”
Kinsey went on to describe the tactics used by Meghan and Harry during the 2020 election, months after Megxit when the pair had quit the UK to move Stateside.
She added: “Back in 2020 when they did the Time special on ABC, there were calls for the Sussexes to be stripped of their royal titles, to avoid the perception that the British monarchy was intervening in a democratic election.
“It was so fresh off of them stepping down, so I don’t think that argument would happen today.”
Kinsey asked royal correspondent Jennie Bond why Meghan and Harry ‘stayed quiet’ on this year’s election.
Jennie said: “It’s a bit of a tightrope that Harry in particular is walking. I don’t think the American people would welcome a British prince wading into their American election.
“He can’t vote over there so what’s he going on about? For Meghan it’s entirely different. She’s an American citizen, she can talk – we’ve heard all these rumours she might one day going for the presidency herself.
“That seems to have quietened down but she is a political being quite definitely but I think they’ve understood it is a very sensitive situation, while he remains part of the Royal Family so it’s a wise move to stay quiet about it.”
