Meghan Markle has been accused of leaving a “trail of evidence” so that her royal exit would be easier. Although Meghan has faced claims of bullying from palace staff, the 43-year-old has accused staff of failing her – especially when it came to her mental health stuggles during her time in the Firm.
Speaking to Oprah Winfrey during the couple’s bombshell interview in March 2021, Meghan opened up about how bad her mental state had become during her time as a working royal – even revealing that there was a period of time where she didn’t want to live anymore. Writing in his biography about the staff who serve the royals – titled Courtiers – author Valentine Low said the palace “needed evidence of the duty of care the organisation had showed them [the Sussexes]”.
Despite various staff members, such as the King’s private secretary Sir Clive Alderton, claiming that they would squash claims that the Sussexes were not treated correctly, Mr Low claims that Meghan has already left a “trail of evidence behind”.
He added that this was so it would be there for a time when Harry and Meghan could “leave the monarchy” and “[Meghan] would be able to say: look how they failed to support me”.
Mr Low claimed that Meghan had “hijacked the narrative by making it all about her mental health”.
As reported by the Daily Mail, all the things royal staff had done to help the couple succeed were forgotten which allowed Meghan to point out all the times they had failed her.
Prince Harry and Meghan annouced their plans to step down from royal duties in January 2020, with their final official engagement taking place two months later.
The couple’s statement, posted at the time on Instagram, read: “After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution…”
The couple now reside in California with their son Archie – who was born in the UK in 2019 – and daughter Lilibet.
