Meghan Markle has been dubbed the “Duchess of Privacy” by a royal commentator, who criticised her for her decision to upload a private video of her and Prince Harry dancing in hospital before Princess Lilibet’s birth. The Duchess of Sussex caused a media storm on Wednesday evening after she took to her official Instagram account to post a highly unusual family video of her and Prince Harry dancing to Starrkeisha’s The Baby Momma Dance.
At the time of Princess Lilibet’s birth on June 4, 2021, the song became a viral challenge on TikTok, with thousands of expectant mothers showcasing their moves. However, it appears Meghan’s video did not please the majority of fans and royal watchers, who described it as “cringe”. The Daily Mail’s Sarah Vine was highly critical of the Duchess and claimed that it’s hard to see what Meghan “wants to achieve” by posting such an intimate video of her and her husband.
She wrote: “The Duchess of Privacy herself, twerking like some vulgar commoner to Starrkeisha’s viral hit The Baby Momma Dance, while Prince Harry dad-dances around her like an over-excited flamingo doing an elaborate courtship dance? It can’t be real – can it?”
The commentator described the video as “eye-popping, jaw-droppingly embarrassing” and blasted the couple for campaigning for their privacy.
She said: “I mean, fine as a light-hearted private moment between the two of you – marriage is full of those; but not something you share with the entire world, surely? Especially when, you know, ‘privacy’.”
Ms Vine questioned why the Duchess uploaded the video now, suggesting it could be because she thought a “kooky display of twerking might endear her to the masses” or that it would look like her “taking back control”.
She added: “But it’s hard to see what she wants to achieve with this video, not just because it’s crass and vulgar, but also because it really does remove any remaining leg she and the Prince might have had to stand on in terms of protecting their privacy.”
Meanwhile, Meghan’s video was savaged on social media, with the majority of fans roasting it and dubbing it “cringe”.
One user wrote on X: “WT* is this absolute clusterf*** of cringe? Bleach your eyeballs after viewing.”
Another one commented: “This is the most desperate and hypocritical thing I have ever seen from two people who wanted to PROTECT their kids from social media and wanted privacy.”
A third one said: “You really have to wonder if it’s actually a p*** take and it was filmed last week!”
A fourth one added: “I know right? I wish I could unsee this.”
A fifth one opined: “Yeah i think Meghan Markle should’ve acted princessy instead of cringe what of it.”
Another blated: “Mortifying!”
However, despite the big majority of people online criticising the video, there were some who liked it.
One user said on Instagram: “Never in my life did I expect to see Prince Harry dance to Baby Mama but here we are and it’s amazing.
A second one added: “I almost can’t believe my own eyes. What an amazing video to share with us.”
A third one commented: “I am so glad that they feel comfortable enough to share this with the world. They are in their joy era. They are no longer trying to please anyone. They are truly free. Love it.”
