Mechanic urges drivers to stop their car ‘immediately’ if they hear one sound

Petrol and diesel owners have been warned to stop their vehicles “immediately” if motorists hear a crunching sound coming from their brakes.

Leading mechanic Scotty Kilmer has warned that “it’s too late” if road users notice a loud scraping noise from the front or rear of their vehicle.

This noise suggests the car’s brake pads are completely worn out meaning the discs could become severely damaged.

Scotty warns road users can prevent their car from reaching this stage by regularly checking the brake pads as often as possible.

A small squeaking sound could be the first indication of an issue meaning road users can get problems solved before they deteriorate.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Scotty said: “Today I’m going to show you how to tell if your brake pads are wearing out.

“Now your brake pads squeeze your rotors to stop the car using friction. Eventually, friction wears the pad material off.

“Now if you start hearing squeaks every time you hit the brakes pull off the wheel and check.

“If the brake pad material is getting thinner than a dime, time to change your pads.

“And if you hear a crunching sound when you step on the brakes you went too far, it’s too late.

“It would eat up the pads and the rotors then you got to buy something you didn’t have to in the first place.

“But if they’re making horrible noises. Stop and fix it immediately. I had a guy who kept driving it, he went so far the hub fell off.”

According to the leading repair comparison site BookMyGarage, brake pads and brake discs are some of the “most important parts” of any car.

Letting brakes wear out could lead to motorists failing their MOT tests so motorists must make sure they get the parts fixed when issues arise.

Prices can dramatically vary depending on how many parts need to be replaced.

A simple set of brake pads costs around £45.79 with labour costs increasing costs to around £121.80.

However, leaving the pads to wear out will lead to road users needing to fix the entire disc which can be more costly.

BookMyGarage warns the average cost of a front brake pad and disc replacement is £274.21 with a £252.67 charge for a rear pad and disc fix.
