Strip your bed

The first step in cleaning your mattress involves stripping your bed completely. By removing all sheets, duvet covers, and pillows, you can thoroughly inspect your mattress for any stains or signs of wear.

While your bed is bare, it’s an ideal time to freshen up your sleeping environment by washing your bedding. This ensures everything feels fresh and comfortable when you get into bed later.

Air out your mattress

Once you’ve stripped your bed, it’s time to let your mattress breathe. Open your bedroom window and allow fresh air to circulate for a few hours.

This not only helps to eliminate any lingering smells but also prevents the accumulation of moisture, which can lead to mould and mildew growth. This is crucial as exposure to mould can trigger allergic reactions and disrupt your sleep.

Eliminate odours

Bicarbonate of soda is a fantastic solution for persistent odours. Simply scatter it liberally over your mattress, leave it for approximately 15 minutes, and then vacuum it up.

The bicarbonate of soda works by absorbing moisture and neutralising any unpleasant smells, leaving your mattress feeling fresh and clean. This not only prolongs the lifespan of your mattress but also promotes a more inviting environment for a superior night’s sleep.

Tackle stains

If you’ve spotted sweat stains on your mattress, don’t fret. You don’t need an expensive product to clean them up.

Simply combine three tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda with one cup of warm water and a few drops of washing-up liquid. Dab the stain gently rather than scrubbing it, as applying too much force can push the stain deeper into the delicate fibres.

Once the mattress is fully dry, you’ll have a clean, stain-free surface, ready for a good night’s sleep.

Thorough vacuuming

Your mattress tends to attract dust, dead skin cells, and other debris. The most effective way to tackle this is by vacuuming thoroughly and regularly.

Attach a small brush or upholstery tool to your vacuum cleaner and gently sweep over the mattress surface, focusing particularly on seams, edges and creases.

By vacuuming your mattress every few months, you’ll help minimise dust accumulation and foster a healthier, more peaceful sleep environment.

A recent survey conducted by Barker and Stonehouse has shed light on how your reliable mattress could potentially pose a significant health risk. The study discovered that around one third of Brits have never replaced their mattress.

So if your mattress has been with you for more than seven to ten years, it’s time to say goodbye and indulge in a new one for the betterment of your health and hygiene.
