The San Francisco 49ers announced they have signed defensive lineman Matthew Judon to the team’s practice squad on Monday.
The 34-year-old is a four-time Pro Bowler and has appeared in 145 games across his 10-season NFL. career. He has registered 423 tackles, 72 sacks, 20 passes defensed, nine forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries and one interception in his regular season career.
This signing largely stems from the slew of injuries to San Francisco’s defensive line. Judon said as much when asked why he signed with San Francisco.
“With all of the injuries piling up over there, I think I can just come in help until some of them guys get back,” Judon said, per a video posted to his Instagram account.
Judon also referenced his relationship with 49ers defensive coordinator Raheem Morris, who coached him during his time with the Atlanta Falcons.
49ers star edge rusher Nick Bosa is expected to miss several weeks with a calf injury. This was just the most recent injury to San Francisco’s defensive front, which also includes defensive tackle James Thompson Jr. and 2025 first round pick Mykel Williams, who is nearing a return after suffering a torn ACL last season.
Judon’s best days are likely behind him. But he could help the undefeated San Francisco team stabilize their defensive front until some of these players return to the field.
