Matt Hancock humiliated by Jacob-Rees Mogg's schoolboy son after making swipe at dad

Matt Hancock was publicly humiliated during a visit to Eton after taking a swipe at Tory MP Jacob Rees-Mogg – only for the Brexiteer’s own son to put him in his place with a withering put-down.

The anecdote was revealed by Patrick Kidd, writing in the diary section of The Times about the former health secretary’s talk to pupils at the exclusive public school.

Mr Kidd wrote: “Matt Hancock forgot one of the key rules of public speaking on a visit to Eton on Tuesday: always check who is in the audience.”

Bungling Hancock began his talk to the boys “with a joke about how Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg is not a good politician”. However, this backfired on the shamed MP when he invited questions from audience members.

It’s then reported that young Peter Rees-Mogg strode to the wicket to defend his father as “a great man in public and private”.

“Especially as he remained loyal to his wife,” the youngster added.

The audience is then reported to have exploded into laughter and applause for Mogg’s son, with Hancock left humiliated.

The jibe was a reference to Mr Hancock’s fall from grace in 2021, when he was forced to resign his job after being caught on camera in a romantic clinch with colleague Gina Coaldangelo, in breach of social distancing guidelines in force during the pandemic.

Peter Rees-Mogg, now thought to be aged 16, is the North Somerset MP’s lookalike son, who accompanied his father to several Brexit events as a child after the 2016 referendum.

He was even on hand when former Prime Minister Boris Johnson delivered his resignation speech in September 2022, dressed in a blue suit with a yellow tie.

The teenager is one of six children, also including Sixtus, Anselm and Thomas.

Peter is a pupil at the £15,000-a-term public school, which was founded by Henry VI in 1440 under the name Kynge’s College of Our Ladye of Eton besyde Windesore.

As well as being a Conservative MP, his father also hosts a show on GB News.

Since leaving the cabinet, Mr Hancock, 45, has made a name for himself on reality television, appearing in the 2022 series of I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here.

After his affair with Ms Coaldangelo was revealed, the father-of-three split with wife Martha Hoyer Millar.

Express.co.uk has approached Mr Hancock, who now sits as an independent in the House of Commons and who is standing down as an MP at the next election, for comment.
