Matheus Cunha was delighted about Manchester United’s 2-0 triumph over Sunderland on Saturday – despite being dropped from the starting line-up. The Brazilian attacking midfielder has proven a shrewd acquisition at Old Trafford following his £62.5million summer switch from Wolves, displaying tremendous promise even though he has yet to score for United.
Ruben Amorim chose to start the 26-year-old on the substitutes’ bench when United welcomed the Black Cats at the weekend, instead opting for Mason Mount. The Portuguese manager’s gamble proved inspired, with Mount netting his first goal of the season just eight minutes in, controlling a sublime delivery from Bryan Mbeumo before curling the ball beyond a diving Robin Roefs.
Cunha subsequently entered the fray in place of the goalscorer during the second period, after United had extended their advantage through Benjamin Sesko. The summer acquisition has since taken to social media to share his thoughts.
“Nothing to say about how beautiful it is to win like this, at home and with the fans by our side,” his message concluded with a heart on fire emoji.
Sunday also marked a momentous occasion for the player, with his wife, Gabriela Nogueira da Cunha, marking her birthday. In another social media post, he uploaded an image featuring himself, his spouse and their son, Levi.
The youngster sports this season’s third kit, whilst Gabriela dons a vintage long-sleeved jersey displaying the club’s former badge. Translated from Portuguese into English, he captioned the post: “Happy birthday, my love, you are our rock for every moment. Thankful for my wife, mother and friend every day. Me, Lele, and Liloca are in love with you.”
She replied: “Thank you so much for everything, my love! The greatest gift in my life is our family! I love you guys endlessly,” followed by a red heart emoji.
