A classic, but lesser-known war film is hailed by fans as “heartwrenching” with an “incredible ending”. Gallipoli (1981) is set during World War 1 and tells the story of sprinters and friends Frank (played by Mel Gibson) and Archy (Mark Lee) who join up to fight for the Australian Army.

They’re sent to the Gallipoli peninsula to take on the Ottoman Empire, taking part in the Allies’ disastrous Gallipoli campaign, led by Britain. The film, which is loosely based on historical events, is well known in Australia and offers a damning assessment of British officers’ attitudes towards their Aussie allies.

It was directed by Peter Weir (Master and Commander, The Truman Show) and was an early breakout role for Mel Gibson, who went on to become one of Hollywood’s biggest stars with films like Mad Max and Braveheart.

One Audience Writer on Rotten Tomatoes said: “One of the greatest and most honest looks at the true value of war.

“An excellent examination of nationalism, propaganda, and loss of innocence. Beautifully done and it has an absolutely incredible ending.”

Another said the film is “heartwrenching” but “very thought provoking”, adding: “This is a must see film”.

One fan on IMDb said: “This is movie-making at its finest. Splendidly acted and Directed, this is a magnificent movie. Mel Gibson is tremendous, and it’s no wonder that Gibson became a great Star, and later on a recognised talent for filmmaking.

“I am a combat veteran of the great U S Army and the finale of this stunning film made me weep.”

Another said called it an “Australian Masterpiece” that features “truly the pinnacle of cinematography”.

“The ending will grip you and remain steadfast in your mind for the rest of your life, the thought of it is enough to bring tears to the eyes of even a grown man,” they added.

A film-lover also included the epic in a subreddit about some of the best but lesser-known movies about war.

The movie is Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 91% score on the site’s Tomatometer, which reflects the percentage of approved critics who have given it a positive review.

It also has an 83% score on the site’s Popcornmeter, reflecting a positive reception from general viewers.
