Widely regarded as one of the greatest war films ever made, Saving Private Ryan now has a contender, as viewers have uncovered another movie they believe rivals the Steven Spielberg classic. Released in 1970, Patton follows the story of George S. Patton, a war general who led American forces to victory in several key battles during World War II.
The film depicts Patton and his men at various points in the conflict, from fighting in North Africa and securing a crucial victory at El Guettar in Tunisia. It also follows the troop as they turn their attention to Sicily to secure an allied foothold in southern Europe and their preparations for D-Day. The epic biographical film explores Patton’s balance of leadership and his harsh treatment of soldiers, a style that drew heavy criticism as it often clashed with military authority and conventional ideas of warfare.
Patton is portrayed by George C. Scott, who stars opposite the likes of Karl Malden, James Edwards, Carey Loftin and Bill Hickman.
Directed by Franklin J. Schaffner, the film received critical acclaim upon its release and was nominated for 10 Oscars at the 1971 Academy Awards, claiming seven including Best Picture and Best Actor for Scott.
With a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s hardly a surprise that the film has been lauded by Amazon Prime viewers, with some even branding it as good as two of the greatest war films ever made, Saving Private Ryan and Schindlers list.
Taking to social media, one declared: “Patton is about as accurate a war film as you can get, and one of the best portrayals of a real life figure I’ve seen. Definitely deserved it’s 7 Oscars and probably should’ve won more.”
